Hillview Cottages was born out of a lifestyle change for Steve and Cathy Davis and their family. After enjoying a wonderful working life in many and varied locations in country Queensland they found their careers rewarded them with demanding corporate positions in Brisbane. Like many others the work hours plus the time and cost of commuting left little time to enjoy and raise their young family the way they envisaged.
Desperate to get off the rollercoaster of city living and raise their children in a country community they began to search South East Queensland for an alternative. Having met, married and lived in Kingaroy for 7 years in the 1980’s they harboured a passion for the South Burnett and so when they stumbled upon and fell in love with Hillview in 2002, the renaissance began.
The renaissance?? Yes – convert a neglected property with a couple of run down buildings into an idealic country retreat and transform a burnt out policeman of almost 30 years service into a mechanical fitter. "Our work colleagues thought we were mad but we knew there had to be more to life...." They meticulously planned the venture with Cathy working full time during the first stage of development and Steve becoming Mr Mum and the local school bus driver while completing the renovation of the old dairy.
And so, in 2004 one dream came to fruition when they opened the first of three award winning cottages on the property. Through hard work and a shared vision Hillview now offers three stylish but distinctly different cottages for weary travellers and disillusioned city folk.
The Dairy – The cows have gone and this is now a modern stylish 2 bedroom (two bathroom) cottage great for 2 couples or a family. But if there is just the two of you then choose from:
The Cottage – Previously the workers cottage at the Kingaroy Golf club from the 1940’s, it was moved to this prime position on the Hillview property in 2004 or
The Church – This little old Methodist Church, previously known as All Saints, was built in 1912 and served the local community of Memerambi. It now sits proudly on the hill overlooking the Memerambi Valley.
Cathy finally got to work from home and no longer struggled to achieve that elusive work life balance or commute for 2 + hours a day!! And in 2006, after being a jack of all trades and master of none, Steve received his trade qualifications as a mechanical fitter!! He wasn't the oldest apprentice at the time but he was pretty close to it. He now teaches at the local Kingaroy TAFE College.
With Steve re-badged as a fitter, it was time to move into the next phase of their lives and sell the school bus and expand their business interests into the cattle market. They purchased the adjoining property where they grow out young cattle for the feedlot market.
Cathy is still considering, what "she wants to do when she grows up", but knows that time is getting closer as the children finish school and move away to university and she and Steve plan the next chapter of their lives.
"We have had a fantastic time raising our family here but the nomadic instinct is just too strong to hold us here forever"
